The horizontal and vertical splitter bars are adjustable: depress the left mouse button over the bar to slide it up / down or left / right.  The horizontal scroll bar sometimes appears, depending on how continued lines of text are automatically broken.  When the horizontal scroll bar does appear, it can usually be eliminated by moving the vertical splitter bar slightly left or right.
